Deer Park Recap

Wyoming-41 - Deer Park-12

On Friday, Wyoming continued it's CHL win streak with a 41-12 trashing of the Deer Park Wildcats on their home field. The Cowboys are now 3-0 in the CHL, and move their overall record to 4-2. The Cowboys, however, still trail the Madeira Mustangs in the CHL standings.

After getting a slow start in the game, the Cowboys put their foot on the brake and never looked back. After trading touchdowns with the Wildcats in the first two quarters, the Cowboys went up by 7 going into half. Then, they utilized the superb passing attack to score 3 TDs in the 3rd quarter to bring the score to the eventual final of 49-12.

QB Will Marty and WR Ben Kurtz looked like All Pros playing with 3rd graders as they connected for 301 yards of Marty's 434. With this stellar performance, Kurtz broke two Wyoming school records with 13 receptions in a game (previous record 11) and and most receiving yards in a game (previous 224).  Kurtz had one TD as well, a ten yard pass turned into a 65 yard scamper for paydirt. Marty hooked up with all four of his wideouts for Touchdowns, throwing to Dominic Vamosi, Dawson Rogers, Bilal Dawson, and Kurtz for scores. Junior Running Back Terrell Dailey also had two scores on 14 yards.

On defense, the Cowboys held the opponents to 15 points or less for the 4th straight week, only allowing two TDs, both in the air. Senior Conner Hughes led the team in tackles with 11.

Next week, the Cowboys stay on the road against Taylor and hope to keep their win streak alive. Look for my Taylor Preview later this week, and also check out this interview with Ben Kurtz, Will Marty, and Coach Aaron Hancock, courtesy of Cincinnati.com. http://cincinnati.com/blogs/preps/2012/09/29/wyoming-cowboys-ride-away-with-a-w-at-deer-park/

Deer Park Preview

WYOMING COWBOYS (3-2)                    DEER PARK WILDCATS (1-4)

After coming off a 51 point blowout win over Reading, the Cowboys look to continue their CHL win streak against Deer Park (1-4) on Friday. The Wildcats look to bounce back after a 49 point home loss to Taylor last week move out of 6th place in the league.

The Wyoming defense should look to continue their success they had against Reading last week, only allowing 89 total offensive yards. The Deer Park offense, after all, only racked up 191 yards against Reading  2 weeks ago. Their run game was almost nonexistent in this game, and their passing offense was not much better.

On the offensive side of the ball, Will Marty should get lots of yards through the air on an inexperienced Wildcat defense that features only 8 seniors. Expect lots of carries for JR running back Terrell Dailey as well,  and this Cowboy attack looks to hit the ground running.

Reading Recap

Wyoming - 51 Reading - 0

On Friday, the Cowboys let the Blue Devils have it at home to bring in a big win for Homecoming. The Cowboys drubbing of Reading marks the last shutout at Bob Lewis since last year against Deer Park. In a game that got off the ground quickly, Wyoming controlled the tempo from the very beginning, stopping Reading's offense and scoring very quickly and often. After about midway through the 3rd quarter, Coach Hancock pulled the starters and let the backups get some time, allowing freshmen to join their classmate Eric Perry, who has started at right guard all season.

The high powered Cowboy offense looked as good as it has all season on the Blue Devils, racking up 380 total yards of offense. Running back Terrell Dailey accounted for 113 of these yards along with his career high 4 TDs. Will Marty also had a solid game a QB, going 11 for 18 with160 yards and 0 ints.

The real story of this game however was Wyoming's D, which stifled the Devils offense to only 89 yards total. They also contributed in the scoring, with JR Jalen Fox picking off two of QB Sam Ashbrock's passes, one for an TD, and SO Evan Cramer intercepting one of his own.

Next week, the Cowboys look to continue their win streak in the CHL, at Deer Park on Friday.

Reading Preview

WYOMING COWBOYS (2-2)                        READING BLUE DEVILS (2-2)

HOMECOMING WEEK

One week in autumn, Wyoming High School students go from mad in their support of their Cowboys, to downright fanatic. This one week in autumn, every day the students dress up with a different theme, starting with ugly sweater day, and going on to fancy and nerd day. This one week in autumn, the four high school classes have a contest to see who can make the best parade float. They work all week building up till Friday night, when they parade the floats down Main St. for all to see. The winner is chosen by judges, so the classes battle it out for superiority before uniting to form one monstrous student section to cheer on the Cowboys to victory. This week in Autumn is, of course, Homecoming Week. And being a freshman, I, too, was drawn into the action and had to push back the publishing of this entry to tonight. Your patience is greatly accepted.

On this 2012 Homecoming night, Wyoming looks to gain the edge over the Reading Blue Devils (2-2) in the CHL standings. Both the Devils and the Cowboys are currently tied for 2nd place in the league behind Madeira (3-1) who the Cowboys will face in their final regular season game. This game against Reading, however, should come up all roses for Cowboy fans. This Reading team has wins over lowly Deer Park and Roger Bacon, two teams with one win between them. With Wyoming's offense looking to put big numbers on the board again after last week's 391 total yards of offense only yielded 18 points. Quarterback Will Marty will look to break 1,000 passing yards only 4 games into the season, and Sr. Wide Receiver Ben Kurtz looks to move into first place in CHL receiving yards. The Wyoming Defense will need to hold back the reading offense, however, as the Cowboys have allowed 109 points all year.

After this one week in Autumn is over, the Cowboys will move into the 2nd half of the season with hopes of catching Madeira and wearing the CHL crown.

Indian Hill Recap

Cowboys 18 Braves 13

After a wild run and gun win over Madison last week, the Indian Hill Braves took the Cowboys for their best before Wyoming pulled off a nailbiter victory. Coming into the game on Friday, Indian Hill was winless at 0-3, and the Cowboys were coming off their first win of the season. I predicted that the Cowboys would handle Indian Hill and the game would just be a blowout. Boy was I wrong.

The Braves started out better than the Cowboys for sure, scoring on a 34 yard pass by 2nd string junior QB Matt Thompson. When Wyoming got the ball to have their first drive, the Cowboys moved the ball downfield as usual, coming to within five yards of the goal line. However, then RB Terrell Dailey fumbled into the endzone and it was recovered by IH. So although the Cowboys had covered about 70 yards on the drive, it was all for nothing as the Braves came away with the ball.

Although IH did not score on the ensuing drive, the Cowboys failed to score again as they fumbled into the endzone on consecutive possessions to leave the score at 0-7 going into the 2nd quarter. However, in this second quarter, Dominic Vamosi redeemed his fumble with a 19 yard TD catch to get the 'Boys back in the game. After the XP failed, the Cowboys were still losing by one.

This score remained until the third quarter, when Indian Hill's QB took it in himself with a 15 yard run. The Braves XP failed as well, making the score only 13-6 .But he was not the only QB on the field that could hold his own, as Wyoming's Will Marty cashed in a five yard carry. After missing a 2 point conversion, the Cowboys were still 1 point shy of tying the game, at 12-13. But in the final quarter, Terrell Dailey too made amends for his early fumble, and scored on a 1 yard run to put the score at 18-13. The 2 point conv. failed, so the Cowboys held on to a scary 5 point lead.

But lo and behold, the Wyoming defense came to the rescue, stopping a Brave drive late in the final quarter, allowing the Cowboy offense to come in  with a minute left to ice the game. Final score  18 -13 Cowboys. Senior WR Ben Kurtz led the Cowboys in receiving with 9 recs. for a 118 yards.

Although the game did not turn out how I predicted, the Cowboys came out of their first conference game with  a victory, moving them to second place in the CHL at 2-2.

Indian Hill Preview

WYOMING COWBOYS (1-2)                                   INDIAN HILL BRAVES (0-3)

After earning their first first win of the season last week, and the first of Coach Aaron Hancock's career, the Wyoming Cowboys look to start CHL competition off right. On Friday, the Cowboys will travel east to face the Indian Hill Braves, who have yet to win a game this season (0-3).

This week, the Cowboys will face an Indian Hill team that bowed to Middletown Madison to the tune of 27-0. The same Madison team, you may remember, was handled by the Cowboys last weekend by 23. Diving deeper into the stats, Indian Hill's defense allowed 288 rushing yards to an inexperienced Mohawk backfield. Because Wyoming's defense has slightly struggled this year, and considering that this D held Madison to only one offensive score last week, I'd say that the entire lack of offense on Indian Hill's side will make things a very easy night for the Cowboys D.

On the other side of the ball, the Cowboy offense (especially Running Back Terrell Dailey) should have a field day on the Braves weak D that allowed almost 300 rush yards to the Mohawks. Expect Will Marty to be doing his thing as well, against a Defense that hasn't seen many passes whatsoever this season, let alone the clockwork ball movement of the Wyoming Wide Receiving Corps.

If you attend the game, expect to see lots of Blue and White in the endzone. If all things go to plan, this game should be a blowout.

Madison Wrap-Up

After two weeks of tough losses, the Wyoming football team finally got themselves on track with a 38-15 win over Middletown Madison. After a rain delay pushed the game from Friday night to Saturday afternoon, the Cowboys started the game on Saturday in the first quarter leading 7-0 thanks to a Terrell Dailey Touchdown on Friday. From then on, it was almost all Cowboys.

The Cowboys came from the left, the right, all over Madison's defense. Every which way, the Cowboys offense ran like a well oiled machine. Quarterback Will Marty had a field day on the Mohawk secondary, tossing 268 yards and two TDs, while averaging an astounding 9.9 yards per pass. For those math majors out there, that's a tenth of a yard away from a first down every time Marty touched the ball. I'd say that's a good day. Along with Marty stormed Terrell Dailey, as the Junior scored 3 rushing touchdowns on 115 yards on the ground, along with one receiving TD for 72 yards. Dominic Vamosi also had a touchdown catch, for 15 yards.

Although the Cowboy offense operates smoothly every week, the real story of the game was the strength of the defense. In the past two games, the Wyoming defense has allowed 81 points and a whopping 525 yards to Fenwick. In this Madison game, the Cowboys allowed just one offensive TD in the 3rd quarter, leaving the Madison offense gasping for air in the majority of the game.

Middletown Madison Preview

Wyoming Cowboys (0-2)                  Madison Mohawks (2-0)

This week, the Cowboys hope to take hold of their season after two straight losses, a one point heartbreaker      against Fenwick, and a 20 point loss at the hands of powerful Turpin. This week, the Cowboys face the Middletown Madison Mohawks (2-0) out of the SWBL. The Mohawks come into Wyoming after beating two CHL teams, Deer Park and Indian Hill.
In addition to what had to be tough emotions, the Cowboys come off of the Turpin loss without 3 defensive starters. Junior DE Griffin O'Gara is out for 6 weeks with a torn ACL, Junior DL Ike Palmer goes out with a broken foot, and Junior Ken Darlington goes out indefinitely with a head injury. In the wake of this, there will be movement on the line, including Freshman Cooper O'Gara stepping up to take Palmer's place.
Along with the trouble on defense, the Cowboys also took a blow when starting RB Terrell Dailey left the game on Friday with a knee injury. Although Dailey is expected to return on Friday, it will be interesting to see if he can play through some pain and perform at the same level.
The Cowboys defense has been shaky in their first two starts, but if they finally step up with their young players, they can really make a move to win this game. However, they will have to defend against the rushing abilities of Tre Owens, who scored 4 rushing TDs in the first 2 game for the Mohawks.  QB Will Marty should produce as well as he did in  his first two starts, throwing for 485 yards in his first two games.

Turpin 34 - Cowboys 14

On Friday night, the Spartans of Turpin High School came into Wyoming and beat the home team by twenty, earning their second win of the season and dropping the Cowboys to 0-2. The game was close, for the most part, for 3 quarters, only in the 4th when Turpin scored 3 TD's and 20 points did the game slip away.

In the first quarter, Turpin scored an early touchdown and took a 14-0 lead with at the 10 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. 3 minutes later, the Cowboys rallied back with Dominic Vamosi catching an 11 yd TD pass, but missing the XP put the score at 14-6. 3 minutes into the 3rd quarter, Will Marty found Ben Kurtz for a 15 yd TD to put the Cowboys down 1, before Dawson Rogers caught a two point conversion to tie the score at 14 a piece. In the fourth quarter however, all the pieces fell through, as the Spartans scored 3 TDs (2 on the ground) to bring the score (and the eventual final) to 34-14 in  favor of Turpin.

The most glaring pieces in this Cowboys loss were the same things that I highlighted in the week 1 loss to Bishop Fenwick : Dropped passes and shaky defense. Although the Cowboy offense did not score as readily as they did against Fenwick, (Turpin held the Cowboys to just 308 total yards, as opposed to 504 against Fenwick) the Cowboy D once again was demolished on the run game, allowing 334 toal rushing yards and allowing QB Connor Jansen to rush for 128 himself and two TDs. And to make matters worse for Wyoming , they lose 3 defensive starters to injuries against Turpin (Juniors Ken Darlington, Griffon O'Gara, and Ike Palmer).

The Cowboys will need to recover big this week against Middletown Madison (2-0), who are coming off two wins against CHL teams by a combined score of 70-0. The Cowboys are tied for last place in the CHL with 4 other teams, but a win on Friday will help their cause.
