In the first quarter, Turpin scored an early touchdown and took a 14-0 lead with at the 10 minute mark of the 2nd quarter. 3 minutes later, the Cowboys rallied back with Dominic Vamosi catching an 11 yd TD pass, but missing the XP put the score at 14-6. 3 minutes into the 3rd quarter, Will Marty found Ben Kurtz for a 15 yd TD to put the Cowboys down 1, before Dawson Rogers caught a two point conversion to tie the score at 14 a piece. In the fourth quarter however, all the pieces fell through, as the Spartans scored 3 TDs (2 on the ground) to bring the score (and the eventual final) to 34-14 in favor of Turpin.
The most glaring pieces in this Cowboys loss were the same things that I highlighted in the week 1 loss to Bishop Fenwick : Dropped passes and shaky defense. Although the Cowboy offense did not score as readily as they did against Fenwick, (Turpin held the Cowboys to just 308 total yards, as opposed to 504 against Fenwick) the Cowboy D once again was demolished on the run game, allowing 334 toal rushing yards and allowing QB Connor Jansen to rush for 128 himself and two TDs. And to make matters worse for Wyoming , they lose 3 defensive starters to injuries against Turpin (Juniors Ken Darlington, Griffon O'Gara, and Ike Palmer).
The Cowboys will need to recover big this week against Middletown Madison (2-0), who are coming off two wins against CHL teams by a combined score of 70-0. The Cowboys are tied for last place in the CHL with 4 other teams, but a win on Friday will help their cause.
Next Game for Wyoming: Friday, Sept. 7
vs Middletown Madison (2-0)
Game time 730
